Saint Mary’s County, Maryland
Traditionally, St. Mary’s County has been known for its unique and historic culture of Chesapeake Bay tidewater farming, fishing, and crabbing communities. A drive through this stunning county is filled with vistas of open farm fields, old tobacco barns, and small towns. If your heart’s desire is to live on a large parcel of land near the water, Saint Mary’s county is ideal. It has small cities but generally feels rural. The entire county qualifies for affordable USDA loans.
Saint Marys county was the first Maryland Colony, and the first capital of the Colony of Maryland. The settlement of Lord Baltimore’s Maryland began with the arrival of passengers from England at St, Clement’s Island in the Potomac river on March 25, 1634. It was settled by English Catholics and is considered to be the birthplace of religious freedom in North America at a time when the British colonies were settled primarily by Protestants.
Because of the historical importance of Saint Mary’s County it has some of the most interesting and informative historical sites and museums in the country.
